Sunflowers and Light

I moved back to College Station a few weeks ago and found this rug sitting in the kitchen, left behind by the girls before. I journaled of sunflowers once over the summer, and I thought of buying a bouquet of them but forgot again and again. Then—this! A special gift from Jesus, I think.
I shared part of my story with a friend the other day, and I told her the parts that are messy, the narratives that make me feel afraid and especially ashamed.
She listened intently, eyes fixed on me--then she voiced with overflowing compassion, “Sarah, I’m a firm believer that evil cannot live in the light. Shine a light on what’s hard, and evil cannot live there.”
Another friend once recently described her favorite flower as a sunflower "because they always grow facing the light, Sarah.”
I haven’t quite decided who I want to grow up to be yet, but I do know this: I want to grow to face the light. I want to be a sunflower of sorts, turning towards the light as I walk through all my days [John 1:5].
I keep a packet of sunflower seeds tucked away in my Bible, a reminder that as we plant seeds of hope and wholeness and life, the Lord is growing flowers even in the places we cannot see. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not, cannot, WILL NOT overcome it. Maybe you need a reminder of this truth today? --maybe you need a sunflower kitchen rug too?
Friends, let’s turn toward the Light as we walk through all our days, knowing that the Lord is faithful and good. Happy Monday, everybody!
